Diversity and inclusion is about recognising, respecting and valuing differences based on all the elements that make each human being unique. It is about creating a culture where different perspectives can be heard for the benefit of our communities.
At John Holland we have six diversity streams to align our strategic initiatives:
To drive our initiatives, John Holland has proudly established many inclusion networks including – The Pride Network, Celebrate Women Network, the GROW Network, The Indigenous Inclusion Network, Bulabul and Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) working group. We strongly encourage our people to take part in these networks to enhance the inclusiveness of our workplace.
At John Holland we understand the importance of creating a healthy work life balance. We are taking the lead in creating better balance by supporting our people to work flexibly. Flexible working is not necessarily about working less hours – it is about working smarter and maximising performance, output and wellbeing. We offer many different types of flexible work options, anything from purchasing additional leave or different start - and finish times, to working from home, job sharing or extended breaks during the days. It is all dependent on which arrangement suits you, your team and John Holland.
We acknowledge the breadth of cultural diversity of our people at John Holland and understand that celebrating holidays means different things to different people – with traditional public holidays often not meeting the needs of our people. We are therefore very excited to have launched our Multicultural leave exchange, an initiative that allows employees to nominate an exchange date of a public holiday for a religious or culturally significant day that is important to them. This new initiative will not only complement and strengthen our existing working flexibly policy, as well as driving greater inclusion for our people.
We are proud of the progress we have made in gender diversity. We ensure our people are paid equally in like-for-like roles by regularly monitoring salaries to ensure equality. Joe Barr, our CEO, is a pay equity ambassador with WGEA. We were the first Australian construction company to implement a paid parental leave scheme for all our people and have recently updated it to be more flexible and gender neutral, encouraging more men to take primary carers leave. We are also proud to host a female mentoring program focused on providing women at John Holland with tools to achieve their career development goals and strengthen their networks. On top of this program, we have a business-wide mentoring program to assist all our people in their development.
