We offer our grads a structured, two-year program that includes:

Our Internship Program

Our Internship Program was voted #4 in the 2020 Top Internship Programs in Australia! The program gives students an exciting opportunity to gain insight into what it’s like to work in Construction and John Holland.

We offer our interns a structured, 12-week program that includes:

  • On-the-job learning through 12 weeks on a project or in a business unit
  • Formal learning and development programs and initiatives
  • Opportunities to network with senior leaders across a diverse project-based business

Where does John Holland operate?

  • We work in both metropolitan and regional areas, creating projects that transform lives, make communities more connected, and grow the economy. To learn and grow as much as possible during your time on the Graduate Program, it is essential that you’re prepared to relocate.

Is the John Holland Graduate Program a two-year program?

  • During those two years, you’ll have the opportunity to do a minimum of two rotations. This will provide you with the knowledge, skills and experience to be a well-rounded professional in the construction industry.

When can I apply for the Graduate Program?

  • Applications are now closed.

What do I need to do / have to be able to apply?

  • To be eligible to apply for the Graduate Program, you need to have completed your degree between January 2019 – December 2022. This includes all your study requirements and necessary industry placements.
  • You will also need to be an Australia/New Zealand Citizen, Permanent Resident or have full Australian/NZ working rights.

If I’m successful, when would I start?

  • Our program commences in February 2023.

Home to Australia’s largest capability in the rail sector, the Rail Group undertakes projects in each state of Australia in urban, regional, and remote desert environments.

We deliver complex multi-discipline rail projects and specialist projects covering operations, construction, maintenance, and renewals of track, signalling, overhead line, stations, and structures in both live operational environments and greenfield sites.

Signalling & Communications

Our Signalling & Communications division employs a skilled and diverse team of signalling engineers, electricians, and communications tradespeople wo are experienced across all facets of signalling and communications. We offer turn-key solutions and have the skills, experience, and facilities to complete all aspects of design, project engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning and maintenance support.

Suitable majors: Electrical, Mechatronics, and Mechanical Engineering


Overhead Wiring (OHW)

With a team of experienced managers, engineers, technicians, and tradespeople, we are industry leaders in overhead wiring. We construct overhead wiring systems including the foundations supporting the OHW Masts/Gantries, the installation if the Masts/Gantries, the overhead wiring catenary/contact system, and the commissioning of the assets, across LV, HV, 1500DC, and AC systems.

Suitable majors: Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering


Power Systems & Electrical

The majors Power Systems & Electrical team comprise of accomplished managers, engineers, superintendents, supervisors, and electricians with the skills and ability to work on HV, LV, 1500V DC, traction substations, and section huts. They cover the design, installation, and commissioning of electrical systems across all rail environments.

Track & Civil

Our Track & Civil team is comprised of experienced managers, engineers, superintendents, supervisors, welders, road-rail plant operators, track machine operates, and plant fitters. We provide specialist capabilities in construction, maintenance and operation across a full range of track and civil services, including track construction, re-railing, welding, and resurfacing.

Plant Services

Our Plant services team support our projects by utilising our owned and maintained plant and equipment, which includes the largest privately owned specialist railway fleet in Australia. This covers plant hire, maintenance management and compliance of specialised rolling stock rail plant equipment, and motor vehicles.

Who we are 

The national Infrastructure business unit is at the forefront of some of the largest projects ever undertaken in Australia.

Covering the breadth of the nation, the talented members of Infrastructure, together with our colleagues in Major Projects and Rail, are building 21st-century metro systems, technologically advanced energy and water infrastructure as well as upgrading roads, bridges and rail lines. ​​​​​​​

Our projects 

Our expertise in infrastructure spans more than 2,500 projects in Australia alone, for both public and private entities. 

Current projects we are delivering include Melbourne Metro and the Level Crossing Program, and West Gate Tunnel in Victoria; Sydney Metro City and Southwest and the Sydney Gateway in New South Wales; and the Bruce Highway Upgrade – Maroochydore Road and Mons Road Interchanges and the Kidston Pumped Storage Project in Queensland.

As part of our Infrastructure graduate program, you will get the chance to work on exciting projects through graduate rotations, providing you with exposure and experience of truly life-changing projects. In our Infrastructure business unit, we ‘bid, win, deliver’ and in joining us, we will give you the opportunity to be part of the entire process, from pre-contracts and business development to launching and delivering exciting projects.

The Building Group provides the platform for the development of integrated building and operations solutions, from initial concept, to financing, planning, design, costing, construction, operations and maintenance.

We provide technical expertise in geotechnical, foundations, structural systems, services distribution and architectural finishes, ensuring John Holland is at the forefront of new products and materials sourced from across our local, national and international supply chains.

The People team offer crucial HR support to all areas of the John Holland business. You will be working with the team in an office-based role in the Corporate division where you will have the opportunity to witness the complex inner workings of the Organisational Development, Employee & Industrial Relations, Payroll and HR function. .

Not only will you gain invaluable experiential knowledge from such a wide ambit of the People function, but you will also discover just how rewarding it is to work for a company that put the needs of people and transforming lives at the forefront.

The Commercial team are integral to the continued success of John Holland as an industry leader. Through key functions such as project controls, estimating and planning, risk management, analysis, reporting and tender assurance, you will have the opportunity to learn from the industry’s best in a dynamic and challenging environment. A Graduate in the Commercial team will have first-hand experience with some of the most exciting and complex construction projects in Australia.

Whilst this is an office-based role, the Corporate division supports projects across all disciplines (Rail, Infrastructure, Building, Major Projects). There will be an opportunity for a rotation on project where you can gain hands on experience and personally contribute to the competitive commercial advantage John Holland maintains in the industry.

The IT Team whilst office based, works directly with our construction projects, leveraging emerging technology to develop future focused digital products and solutions. In your time as an IT Graduate at John Holland, you will utilise advanced analytics and machine learning concepts to create customer insights and improved business capabilities.

At John Holland, we pride ourselves not only on providing technical expertise, but also our ability to teach these skills to the young talent of the next generation. Being future-focussed, we seek to empower our young talent with comprehensive coaching and guidance to positively shape our graduates . You will not only gain invaluable exposure across the IT discipline, but will receive significant support and care from leaders in the industry who are genuinely invested in your growth and development.

TEK (Technology, Engineering & Knowledge) is an internal team of specialists who work closely with all disciplines across John Holland (Rail, Infrastructure, Building, Major Projects) to ensure outstanding outcomes are delivered for our customers. TEK works with the business to develop operational and delivery methodologies to foster technical excellence across engineering, design management, digital engineering and systems assurance.

As a TEK Graduate you will be office based with the opportunity to gain invaluable exposure across all stages of the project life cycle, being involved from the initial tender to project delivery. This will include site work on projects throughout the rotation.
